Don the Swan

‘Don the Swan' was a short made for the opening Stratford-upon-Avon's local cinema, 'The Picture House' and so became the first film ever screened there. 


As a result of Mike's daughter, Caroline, winning the open competition comission for the script, he found himself with a skeleton crew, a shoestring budget and a lot of kids, birds and animals to deal with. The story featured Don (the Swan) wandering around the various tourist attractions of Shakespeare's home town and eventually ending up in the new cinema, watching himself on the screen. 


Not only was the Cinema only partly built when we filmed there, but swans are wild birds and under royal protection so tend not to take much notice of Directors. 'Never work with children or animals' suddenly seemed like very good advice.  Especially when it's your own kids and swans! Problems are there to be solved and we got there in the end, although 'Don', even when shot against a blue background in the local Swan Sanctuary, was ultimately played by around a dozen different birds. Lucky that swans are all the same colour. At least my kids did what they were told - most of the time...
